I can I know

figuring it out, one step at a time

Nighttime Numb

Awake in the darkness.

The glare of the phone screen

Burns shadows into the backs of my eyes.

Burning, hot, through my palms,

Exhaustion burns my entire body.

The hum of the AC cuts

Into the hum of my overflowing mind.

Random bursts of unrelated sounds

As my fingers scroll, possessed,

My eyes glued, my touch automatic.

Hearing everything while hearing nothing.

The clock ticks on,

I cannot stop.

Metallic taste of the loss of hope,

Or is it the loss of control?

Scents of confusion.

Deep breaths.

Eventually, I sleep.
